Democracy Day

Our names are Alex & Lily, and we are the current co-chairs of the Harvard Votes Challenge, a University-wide non-partisan initiative dedicated to increasing voter participation and civic engagement on campus. We wanted to reach out to the Harvard Club of Rhein-Main to tell you about an initiative we’ve been working on.

Adjacent to our work with HVC, we are working with a group of student voting leaders from across the University to advocate that Harvard designate all federal Election Days as “Democracy Day” starting in 2022. Democracy Day will be an instruction-free day with inclusive civic engagement programming to build civic culture and institutionalize time off to vote for all eligible students, staff, and faculty. Democracy Day will further integrate Harvard into the surrounding Cambridge and Boston communities and elevate participatory citizenship.

We’re collecting signatures from Harvard alumni (undergraduate and graduate) and alumni organizations, as well as all other members of the Harvard community, in support of Democracy Day. We have been overwhelmed by the support so far. Over 100 faculty members––including Professor Steve Levitsky and Professor Daniel Ziblatt—and many alumni have signed on to support the Democracy Day movement.

We would greatly appreciate your club’s signature and your support in reaching more alumni!

Please feel free to reach out to us if you have any questions or want to be involved in the Democracy Day movement. Our emails are included below.

Thank you very much for your consideration. We hope we can earn your support for Democracy Day!
